Biblical Numerology

Biblical Numerology

Posted on 01 Sep 2022

It seems quite obvious that the Bible uses numbers in patterns. Who can deny that 40 is significant. Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years. Whether or not the analysis of these number patterns are accurate is up for debate. But I present to you this information condensed from the book, Number in Scripture by Bullinger.

    THE NUMBER OF UNITY
    New beginnings.

    There cannot be two firsts. One is God’s number. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deut 6:4). God is the only God (Ex 20:3). The number one stands alone, independent of all others. God doesn’t need help in His accomplishments; therefore He is the one and only God.

    Number one in the Bible means “unity” and “uniqueness.” There is one body; the church made up of true believers. There is one Spirit; the Holy Spirit who indwells every believer individually also indwells the church collectively. There is one hope; the hope to be like Christ. There is one Lord; Jesus Christ who died for us all. There is one faith; the Christian faith based on Christ’s death on the cross. There is one baptism; the baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire. There is one God and Father of all; God Almighty who is over all and through all and in all (Eph 4:4–6; Jn 17:21, 22.).

    THE NUMBER OF DIVISION
    Witnessing.

    The number two in the Bible has several meanings. The number two denotes a difference. The number two proves there is a division or a separation. On the second day of Creation, God divided the waters: earthly waters and heavenly waters. In the bible there is the duality of two things being opposite and at no times can these two things be both at the same time: light and darkness, good and evil, heaven and hell, the saved and unsaved, there are two ages, this age and the age to come (Matt. 12:32; 13:39. 40. 49; Mark 10:30), a sword with two edges (Heb 4:12; Mk 6:7 & Rev 11:3). The number two suggesting division and separation is seen in the following examples: two birds, one slain and one set free; two goats, one slain, the other one set free; two masters; two covenants (OT & NT); law and grace; Christ and the anti-Christ; the natural and the spiritual; the Son who has two natures: human and divine, 2 Testaments: the Old and New, two types of people: Sheep and Goats, Man is Male and Female. the righteous and the wicked as in Psalm 1.

    Two is the minimum number of people to be sent on an important assignment. Two angels were sent to Sodom (Gen 19:1); two spies were sent to Jericho (Josh 2:1); and Jesus sent His disciples out two by two (Mk 6:7). Also, two is the minimum number for witnesses. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established” (Deut 19:15).
    In conclusion, the number two is symbolic of:

    1. a difference or division;
    2. the minimum number for an important assignment;
    3. and the minimum number of witnesses for a matter to be established.
  • 3
    THE NUMBER OF DIVINE COMPLETENESS & PERFECTION.
    Three in the Bible is divine fullness or completion as in the Godhead of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Some examples of three being the number of spiritual fullness: Jonah was in the belly of the big fish three days and Jesus was in the grave three days. Three days were enough to prove that Jesus had conquered sin, death, and the grave.

    Three is the minimum number necessary to establish a pattern. Something can happen once by chance; twice by coincidence; but three consecutive times usually indicate a pattern. So, when something happens three times, it points to greater fulfilment yet to unfold. For example, Samuel heard his name called three times before Eli confirmed that it was God calling Samuel (I Sam 3:8), Peter denied Jesus three times. Three times Pilate wanted to release Jesus, but three times the chief priests and rulers rejected Him. This repetition represents the emphasis placed on the rejection (Lk 23:13-25).

    Three speaks of totality, sufficiency and the complete work of God. Man is a trifold being: body, spirit and soul.

    Many time the Bible teachers teach, they usually speak using the trifold concept. For example: faith, hope and love; grace, peace, and mercy; morning, noon, and night; Peter, James and John; Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and “Holy, Holy, Holy” etc.

    And now the three-part benediction: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” (2 Corinthians 13:13)
    There are three qualities of the universe: Time, Space, and Matter. To exist (except for God), all three are required. Each quality consists of three elements. Therefore, we live in a trinity of trinities. (Isaiah 6:3). See also Matthew 28:19 and 1 John 5:7, 8.

    The three qualities of universe are each three:

    1. Time is one yet three Space is one yet three Matter is one yet three
    2. Past Height Solid
    3. Present Width Liquid
    4. Future Depth Gas

    We live in a Trinity of Trinities: Romans 1:20 says, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made…”

    If you are a trichotomist then man is made of three parts:
    Body Soul Spirit

    Human abilities are three
    Thought Word Deed

    The divine attributes are three fold:

    1. God is: Omniscient Love Holy
    2. Omnipresent Light Righteous
    3. Omnipotent Spirit Just

    Three bear witness (1 John 5:8):
    Spirit Water Blood

    Christ is Three Shepherds

    1. The Good Shepherd (John 10:14-15) – speaking of His death
    2. The Great Shepherd (Heb. 13:20) – speaking of His resurrection
    3. The Chief Shepherd (1 Pet. 5:4) – speaking of His glory

    The Three appearances of Christ:

    1. Past: Has appeared (Heb. 9:26) to put away sin
    2. Present Is appearing (Heb. 9:24) in the presence of God
    3. Future: Will appear (Heb. 9:28) to those who await Him

    The Father spoke from Heaven three times:

    1. Matt. 3:17, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
    2. Matt. 17:5, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him.”
    3. John 12:28, “I have both glorified it [the Father’s name], and will glorify it again.”

    Both the Tabernacle and the Temple consisted of three parts:
    The Court The Holy place The Sanctuary

    Regarding the Tabernacle:
    The Holy of Holies was a cube (10 cubits x 10 cubits x 10 cubits)

    Regarding the Temple:
    The Holy of Holies was a cube (20 cubits x 20 cubits x 20 cubits)

  • 4
    THE NUMBER OF CREATION
    The world; Creative works

    Four is the creation number and it has special significance to the earth. Four is symbolic of earthly completeness. On the fourth day, all materials for the earth were created. Four is the number of the great elements: earth, air, fire, and water. There are four regions or directions: north, south, east, and west. There are four seasons of the year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. There are four phases of the moon: first, half, full, and last. There are four divisions of the day: morning, noon, evening, and night. The Bible also has ten references to the four winds. The 4th clause of the Lord’s Prayer is the first that mentions the earth. The materials of the tabernacle were four and so were the coverings and the ornamentations.

    The number four indicates universality. This means that from one point to the next point, everything is included. It is universal participation. All people will come from all four corners of the earth to enjoy the kingdom of God as is illustrated in the four gospels:    Matthew, Mark,   Luke   and   John. Four in the scriptures portrays universal observation, worship and adoration as in Revelation 4:6-8.

  • 5
    THE NUMBER OF GRACE
    God’s goodness & Pentateuch.

    The number five is merely a part of a whole. It is so small of a bigger piece that it could be considered only a “handful” as the five fingers on one’s hand. The first five books of the Bible known as the Pentateuch comprise only a portion of the 66 books of the entire Bible. When Abraham pleads to God to spare the people of Sodom, he begins by pleading for five (Gen 18:22-23). Israel came out of Egypt 5 in rank (Ex 13:18). David picked up 5 smooth stone to fight Goliath (1 Sam. 17:40). The Holy Anointing Oil was pure and composed of 5 parts (Ex. 30:23-25). Number five is half of the perfect number ten – parable of the ten virgins – five of them were foolish, and five were wise (Mat 25:2).

    At times five indicates just recompense or bounteous reward. Thieves must repay five times the value of the oxen they steal (Ex 22:1). Benjamin was honoured by Joseph
    with five times more food than his brothers (Gen 43:34) and five sets of clothes (Gen 45:22). Jesus took five loaves to feed five thousand.

    The number five represents God’s grace seen throughout the structure of the tabernacle in the wilderness. The pillars were five cubits apart and five cubits high. The brazen altar was five cubits by five cubits. There were five pillars at the end of the Holy Place. The sides of the tabernacle were reinforced by five bars on each side (Exodus 26:26-27). The inner covering of the tabernacle was composed of five curtains which were attached to five other curtains for a total of ten curtains (Ex 26:3). Notice the double five pattern. There were five original priests: Aaron and his four sons (Exodus 28:1)

    Five is a number of preparation as the first five books of the Bible prepare you for Israel’s story throughout the rest of the Bible. The five wise virgins were prepared. David, in preparing for Goliath, took up five smooth stones. To prepare and perfect the saints for ministry, some are called to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors or teachers (Eph 4:11-12). Through these five outlets goes forth the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • 6
    THE NUMBER OF MAN
    Weakness of man; Manifestation of sin; Evils of Satan.

    Six is the number for man because he was created on the sixth day. It should remind people of their human incompleteness. Man without God will always be incomplete. No matter what people do in their own strength, they will always fall one below the perfect number seven.

    What God created on the previous days, “And God saw that it was good.” However, when God made man, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Gen 1:31). The sixth commandment calls our attention to the value of the human life that was created on the sixth day. It says, “Do not kill” (Ex 20:13). The serpent was also created on the sixth day (Gen 1:24). This lets us know that Satan is capable of tricking us if given the chance. Six days mark the completion of creation as God’s work. Therefore, six days were appointed for man’s labour. Six is also the number of balance, harmony, cooperation, marriage and love. Jesus’ first miracle changed six pots of water to wine for the wedding feast (Jn 2:6). Boaz gave Ruth six measures of barley symbolic of his love and protection (Ruth 3:15). Six words are used for man: Adam, ish, Enosh, gehver, anthropos, anar.

  • 7
    THE NUMBER OF SPIRITUAL PERFECTION
    Resurrection; Spiritual completeness; Fathers perfection.

    In the Bible, numbers have spiritual significance. 7 denotes spiritual perfection. It means divine fullness, completeness and totality. It comes from a Hebrew word meaning “to be full,” “to be satisfied,” and “to have enough. One of the most profound examples of the use of the symbolic number 7 is related to the fall of Jericho in the Joshua 6:1-20.
    7 days in a week. 7 colours in the spectrum. 7 of the 10 commandments begin with the word “not.”

    Revelation, the last book of the Bible that completes the word of God contains more sevens than any of the other books. There are 7 churches, 7 seals, 7 trumpets, 7 personages, 7 vials, 7 woes, and 7 new things. Additionally, there are 7 glories of the Son of Man, and 7 blessings. The word “Jesus” is found seven times, “Jesus Christ” seven times and the wrath of God seven times.

    There are 7 “eternals” in Hebrews which are:

    1. A priest for ever (1:6);
    2. Eternal salvation (1:9);
    3. Eternal judgment (6:2);
    4. Eternal redemption (9:12);
    5. Eternal spirit (9:14);
    6. Eternal inheritance (9:15);
    7. Everlasting covenant (13:20).

    Jesus said 7 things on the cross:

    1. Luke 23:34 “Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots;
    2. Luke 23:43 Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise”;
    3. Matthew 27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” — which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”;
    4. John 19:26 “When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son”;
    5. John 19:28 “Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
    6. John 19:30 “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit”;
    7. Luke 23:46 “Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.” “Hallelujah” occurs 28 times or 4 x 7.
    8. “Hosanna” occurs 7 times. “Milk” occurs 49 times or 7 x 7. “Abaddon” occurs 7 times. “After the order of Melchizedek” occurs 7 times.

    In Lord’s prayer are 7 statements express the triad and the quaternary (Mat 6:9-13):

    1. Our Father which art in heaven,
    2. Hallowed be Thy Name.
    3. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
    4. Give us this day our daily bread,
    5. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
    6. Lead us not into temptation,
    7. But deliver us from evil.
  • 4
    THE NUMBER OF NEW BEGINNINGS
    New birth.

    The number eight symbolizes resurrection and a new beginning. 8 people on Noah’s Ark (2 Pet. 2:5); Jewish male babies are circumcised on the 8th day to seal the covenant with God (Gen. 17:12); God made 8 covenants with Abraham. David was the eighth son of Jesse, while Solomon was the eighth son of David. Paul, James, Peter and Jude; Christ is the Resurrection and the Life; His birth place, Bethlehem, is mentioned exactly eight times in the New Testament. Jesus came that people might have a new beginning.

  • 9
    THE NUMBER OF JUDGMENT
    Fruit of the spirit; Divine completeness from the Father.

    Nine is the number of judgment and finality. It is the last of the digits, and thus marks the end; and is significant of the conclusion of a matter. What time was Jesus nailed to the cross? The Bible says the third hour. That’s 9:00 in the morning. How long did He hang on the cross? The Bible says He dismissed His spirit at 3:00 in the afternoon. That’s the ninth hour of the day. Jesus’ work on earth was finished.

    Representing finality and judgment, the Bible has nine records of stoning; nine records of blindness and nine records of leprosy.

    According to Galatians 5:22-23, there are nine fruit of the Spirit. There is no “s” on “fruit of the Spirit” because the individual fruits work together as a final unit of the heart: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. Notice the first one is “love” and the final one is “temperance” or “self-control.” Begin with love and your final result will be temperance. According to I Corinthians 12:8-10, there are nine gifts of the Spirit: wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

  • 10
    THE NUMBER OF DIVINE PERFECTION
    Testimony; Law and responsibility.

    There are four numbers in the Bible that denote completion or perfection – three, seven, ten, and twelve.

    1. Three means “divine perfection.”
    2. Seven means “spiritual perfection.”
    3. Twelve means “governmental perfection.”
    4. Ten is the number of perfection or completion of God’s “divine order.”

    It is the only one of the perfect numbers in which humans have a part. We are part of the ten since it is the number of completion based on God’s order AND human responsibility. The number ten is built into our very anatomy. For instance, we have ten fingers to do God’s work and ten toes to walk upright before God.

    Ten Commandments contain all that is necessary, and no more than is necessary, both as to their number and their order (Ex 20). They are examples of God’s order and man’s responsibility. Then the were 10 plagues on Egypt (Ex. 9:14ff); 10 x 10 silver sockets formed the foundation of the Tabernacle (Ex 38:27); There are 10 “I AM’s spoken by Jesus in John:

    1. I am the Bread of Life (6:35);
    2. I am the Bread of Life which came down from heaven (6:41);
    3. I am the Living Bread (6:51);
    4. I am the Light of the world (8:12);
    5. I am One that bears witness of Myself (8:18);
    6. I am the Door of the sheep (10:7,9);
    7. I am the Good Shepherd (10:14);
    8. I am the Resurrection and the Life (14:6);
    9. I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life (11:25);
    10. I am the True Vine (15:1,5).

    We cannot aspire to divine perfection on our own. We cannot aspire to spiritual perfection on our own. We cannot attain governmental perfection without God. We can honour God’s covenant according to His order and our responsibility.

  • 11
    THE NUMBER OF DISORDER, JUDGMENT, REVELATION
    Eleven signifies a state not yet full. After Judas betrayed Jesus, he committed suicide. One might ask why replace Judas since Jesus had been crucified. Since the twelve disciples represented the twelve tribes of Israel, Judas’ replacement was necessary to bring the number back to the governmental number of twelve. Having only eleven disciples speaks of incompleteness.

    Eleven also represents disorder. The parable about the workers coming to work in the eleventh hour is in contrast to what we believe to be right in order and arrangement (Mat 20:6,9).

    The number eleven can be traced throughout Jacob’s life illustrating incompleteness. According to Gen 32:22, Jacob took his two wives, and his two women-servants, and his eleven sons, and headed back home to confront his estranged brother Esau. At the time Jacob had only eleven sons because Benjamin had not yet been born. Benjamin’s birth brought the total of Jacob’s sons to twelve. But then Joseph (the eleventh son) was sold into slavery, and Jacob thought Joseph was dead. This took the total back to eleven. Joseph spent eleven years in Potiphar’s household where disorder caused by Potiphar’s wife resulted in Joseph going to prison.

  • 12
    THE NUMBER OF GOVERNMENTAL PERFECTION
    Governmental perfection.

    The number twelve speaks of governmental perfection or rule. The sun which “rules” the day, and the moon and stars which “govern” the night. As a symbol, twelve is one of the perfect numbers in the Bible mainly because of the twelve tribes of Israel. Saying the “twelve tribes of Israel” has a double meaning. The tribes are the sons of Jacob whose name was changed to Israel when he wrestled with God. Also, the tribes are of Israel, the nation. Many things in the Bible acknowledge and are patterned after the twelve tribes.

    Following the exodus, Moses built twelve pillars on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:4). Twelve spies were sent to spy out the land (Deuteronomy 1:23). Twelve stones were set as a memorial after crossing the Jordan River (Joshua 4:3). Twelve stones were attached to the breastplate of the priestly garments bearing the names of the twelve tribes (Exodus 39:8-14). The temple involved twelve in its measurements and furnishings. The twelve golden dishes for the dedication of the alter.

    Jesus speaks His first words at the age of twelve (Luke 2:42). Later, He chooses twelve disciples. Twelve baskets of fragments were collected after Jesus fed the five thousand (Mark 6:43). The Book of Revelation says there are twelve gates to the city, twelve angels as gatekeepers and the names of the twelve tribes written on the gates. The gates are twelve pearls and the wall will be on twelve foundations which bear the names of the twelve apostles. The measurements of the New Jerusalem also involve the number twelve in its measurements.

    The number twelve as the perfect governmental number rule within our own society. That’s why there are twelve people on a jury.

  • 14
    THE NUMBER OF PROBATION DELIVERANCE & SALVATION
    The number fourteen speaks of double completion (2 x 7) and compression. There were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile in Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ (Mat 1:17). The story of Jacob and his marriage to the two daughters of Laban. Jacob worked a complete cycle, seven years for Leah and seven years for Rachel. This makes it double completion (Gen 29:14-30).

  • 40
    THE NUMBER OF PROBATION; TRIAL OR TESTINGS.
    Moses was forty years old when he fled from Egypt; He was on probation for forty years while on the backside of the mountain tending sheep; Call called him when he was eighty; He led the Israelites through the wilderness forty years and died at age 120 (Deut. 8:2-5); Moses was on the mount for 40 days (Exodus 24:18); Moses’ life was divided into three distinct periods of forty years each; 40 days of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 3:4). Jesus was tempted for 40 days (Matt. 4:2). Saul, the first king of Israel was on probation for forty years. Noah and his family were in the ark for forty days and forty nights. It took that long for God to purge the earth of sin. Jonah was in the belly of the big fish forty days. God told Ezekiel to lie on his side forty days to symbolize the punishment of Judah. Elijah fasted for forty days while he was hiding from Jezebel.

    If you are approaching your 40th birthday, your testing time is ending. If you have been married 40 years, you are no longer on probation. If you have been on the same job 40 years, you have done well, and your boss knows what you can do.

  • 42
    THE NUMBER OF ISRAEL’S OPPRESSION & FIRST ADVENT
    There were 3 generations of 14 years: first – from Abraham to King David; second – from David to the exile to Babylon and third – from the exile to the Christ. Total of these generations is 42. So, “Jesus came down through 40 and 2 generations,” this illustrates the completion and compression of the history of Jesus.

  • 50
    THE NUMBER OF POWER AND CELEBRATION
    Holy Spirit & Pentecost.

    Fifty is the number of jubilee or deliverance. The Jubilee came after the 49th year (Leviticus 25:10). Fifty is also the number of salvation – Genesis 18, Abraham – Sodom & Gomorah. Pentecost occurred 50 days after Christ’s resurrection (Acts 2).

  • 70
    THE NUMBER OF HUMAN LEADERSHIP AND JUDGMENT
    Punishment and restoration of Israel & Universality.

    Just as the number seven denotes perfection, maturity and completion, the number seventy denotes an entire period or a full state. After 70 years are completed at Babylon and cause you to return to this place (Jeremiah 29:10). Moses appointed 70 elders (Exodus 24:1). Daniel speaks of 70 weeks of the dispensation: “decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness . . .” (Dan 9:24). The Sanhedrin was made up of 70 men. Jesus chose 70 disciples (Luke 10:1). Jesus told Peter to forgive 70 times 7. Seventy is a full state and the ideal life span of a person.

  • 100
    THE NUMBER OF ELECTION; CHILDREN OF THE PROMISE.
    The number one hundred indicates fullness especially when it comes to age. Abraham – birthday of Isaac (Gen 21:5). Since one hundred equals ten tens, the number is a nice round figure that conveys completeness. Israel’s soldiers normally appeared in groups of a hundred. Obadiah hid one hundred prophets from Jezebel. A hundred denotes not only what is full; but also the principle of return – crop 100% (Luke 8:8, 15; Matthew 13:8; and Mark 4:20). Another example of the siginificance of one hundred is in the parable of the lost sheep – its emphasised completeness and return (Matthew 18:12).

  • 666
    THE NUMBER OF ANTICHRIST
    We are warned to have wisdom over evil and know what the mark of the beast is. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. (Revelation 13:18)

    The number refers to Satin, to Nero, the first emperor to persecute Christians, then Hitler or Mussolini as the Antichrist.

  • 1000  THE NUMBER OF DIVINE COMPLETENESS AND FATHERS GLORY
    Thousand (thousand-thousands = chilioi-chilias) is the number used to represent, in biblical times, extremely large numbers. A vast or extended period of time or multitudes of people. As in: Psalms 68:17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels; Revelation 5:11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; I Kings 4:32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five; Numbers 31:5 So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war; Numbers 10:36 And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel.
